Roman encounters

Roman encounters – in the early 18th century as well as today, for many, albeit different reasons, not an easy undertaking. Especially in the Baroque era, Italy was considered a leader in the development of the musical arts. Thus, even the 20-year-old Handel sets out to travel to Rome to meet and learn from the resident musicians. In Rome, Arcangelo Corelli is the undisputed star, leading one of the most famous orchestras in Europe from the violin. In this city, nobles, clergy, scholars and musicians meet at the weekly Cameras, listen to fine music and discuss it. The concert program at Bethanienkirche presents cantatas and chamber music works by the two composers- could this perhaps be what a Sunday afternoon Conversazione of the Accademia dell'Arcadia in a Roman palazzo in 1707 might have looked like?
