Trio Chronos

A few years ago the paths of clarinetist Andreas Langenbuch and pianist Gottlieb Wallisch crossed for a concert in Berlin – one was an instructor, the other a newly-appointed professor of piano in Geneva. It was not until years later that the clarinetist met cellist Simon Deffner in the WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne.

These two musicians inspired Langenbuch to launch his favorite chamber ensemble and found a trio that, with the very different instruments and associated playing techniques and sounds, contains an immense range of possibilities. In its ¬first concerts, the Trio Chronos presented a repertoire of great works from the Classical to the Romantic and modern periods.

Andreas Langenbuch (clarinet), born in 1978 in Rothenburg ob der Tauber, was a guest student at the University of Music Wuerzburg at the age of fourteen. He completed his studies with Norbert Kaiser at the State University of Music and the Performing Arts Stuttgart and frequently attended master classes with Hans Klaus. He gained his first experience and engagements at the state theaters in Stuttgart and Karlsruhe as well as with the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks.

After graduating, he received a regular position in the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin. In addition to the orchestra, he pursued his studies further with a concert exam under François Benda at the Berlin University of the Arts, from which he graduated with distinction. From 2010 to 2017, he led his own class for clarinet majors at the same university. In 2012 he moved to the WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne.

In 2017 he received a clarinet professorship at the Robert Schumann University of Music and Media in Düsseldorf and has since served as principal clarinetist of the Cologne Chamber Orchestra. As a soloist and chamber musician, he performs in Germany and throughout Europe, as well as regularly in Seoul, where, as in Beijing, he also gives master classes.

Simon Deffner (cello), born in Recklinghausen, was a junior student with Gotthard Popp in Dortmund at an early age. He went on to study in the class of Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt at the Carl Maria von Weber College of Music in Dresden as well as with Frans Helmerson at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz in Cologne. He received additional musical inspiration from master classes with Siegfried Palm, Josef Schwab, Wolfgang Boettcher, David Geringas, and Bernard Greenhouse.

As a member of the Perez Quartet, he was involved in the ¬ rst recording of unpublished early works by Ludwig van Beethoven. His active chamber music and solo activities regularly take him to Europe and Asia for concerts with several ensembles. Since September 2008 he has served as associate principal cellist of the WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne.

At the age of sixteen, Gottlieb Wallisch (piano) won First Prize and the “Grand Prix Ivo Pogorelich” at the Stravinsky Awards International Piano Competition in the USA He has performed with many leading orchestras, including the Vienna Philharmonic, Wiener Symphoniker, Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Camerata Salzburg, Frankfurt Radio Symphony, and Festival Strings Lucerne under such conductors as Giuseppe Sinopoli, Sir Neville 8 Marriner, Dennis Russell Davies, Kirill Petrenko, Christopher Hogwood, Bruno Weil, Louis Langrée, and Lord Yehudi Menuhin.

He has recorded numerous CD albums, most recently the complete Beethoven piano concertos on original instruments with the Vienna Academy Orchestra under Martin Haselböck, which was nominated for the Opus Klassik award. Wallisch is professor of piano at the Berlin University of the Arts. In 2012 he was included in the list of Steinway Artists.
