Michael Heupel, Cello

Michael Heupel, born in Athens in 1988, is a sought-after soloist and chamber musician. His dynamic interpretations and imaginative concert programs have led to appearances in leading halls all over the world: he has performed, among others, at the Elbphilharmonie and Laeiszhalle Hamburg, Carnegie Hall in New York, Shanghai Concert Hall, Megaron Concert Hall in Athens, San Francisco Conservatory of Music Concert Hall, and Cuvilliés Theater of the Residenz in Munich.

He is a regular guest at major festivals, concert series, and institutions such as the Athens and Epidaurus Festival, Klub Katarakt Festival for experimental music, Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg, Onassis Stegi, and Full concert series of the BAMPFA in Berkeley, California. His studies with both Tilmann Wick in Hanover and Arto Noras in Hamburg as well as numerous master classes with renowned musicians such as David Geringas, Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt, Julius Berger, Jens Peter Maintz, and the Ensemble Modern have contributed to the development of his artistic personality.

He was a scholarship holder of the Onassis Foundation in Athens, the HfMT Hamburg, and the Alfred Toepfer Foundation. Heupel’s commitment to sharing musical experiences inspired him to create several innovative concert events for his audience. His inventive spirit was recognized by the 2014 Masefield Concert Scholarship, an invitation to speak at the TEDxAcademy in Athens in 2016, and his acceptance as a participant of the Future of Orchestral Culture Fellowship in 2017.

His first solo CD Afierossis was highly praised by the press and selected by the Cello Foundation USA as one of the five best cello recordings of 2017. He plays a 1723 cello made by David Tecchler in Rome.
