Ensemble Stimmwerck
The Ensemble Stimmwerck was founded in Munich in 2001, its name originating in the term used in early music for a group of the same instruments. Four sought-after specialists in ensemble singing join together to form the ensemble–the two tenors Gerhard Hölzle and Klaus Wenk, bass Marcus Schmidl, and Franz Vitzthum, who as a countertenor lends the quartet its unmistakable sound. Their work is founded on intensive collaboration with musicologists and active research in archives. Stimmwerck performs concerts regularly in Germany and abroad and has made guest appearances at such renowned festivals as Laus Polyphoniae Antwerpen, the Lower Saxony Music Festival, and the Leipzig Bach Festival. Regular recordings are an important cornerstone of Stimmwerck’s artistic work, with the ensemble devoting itself to Renaissance composers from German-speaking countries and reviving many of their works for the first time. Since 2005 the group has hosted the annual “Stimmwercktage” on Adlersberg mountain near Regensburg, making use of modern technology such as laptops and projectors to shed light on the work of a selected composer.
