The University of Music “Franz Liszt” Weimar’s Chamber Choir was founded by Walter Rein in 1926 as a madrigal choir and quickly developed into a top ensemble of the university. After a break caused by the Second World War, the choral direction was resumed first by Günter Fredrich, then from the 1970’s by Gert Frischmuth. Since 1997, Frischmuth’s former pupil Jürgen Puschbeck has conducted the ensemble.
The chamber choir has regularly been invited to international festivals and competitions. Numerous awards, such as second place at the 2014 Deutscher Chorwettbewerb (German Choral Competition) and second place at the 2009 international competition “Florilège vocal de Tours” testify to the quality of the ensemble. Tours have led them to almost all European countries, to Japan, Israel, Brasil and the USA. The Weimar Chamber Choir concentrates primarily on a-cappella literature from the 16th to the 21st century, whilst devoting particular attention to the importance of works by Thuringian and Saxon composers. In addition to this, choral symphonies constitute a regular part of their repertoire.
