Pavel Baleff has been the principal conductor of the Baden-Baden Philharmonic since 2007. He was born in Bulgaria and studied at the National Academy of Music in Sofia and in 1993 was awarded the Radio Bulgaria prize for Best Young Musician. Pavel Baleff won first prize at the Carl Maria von Weber International Competition in Munich and received the Herbert von Karajan Foundation prize. In 2003 he won the most lucrative award for young conductors in Germany. In Bulgaria he became Conductor of the Year 2010 for “The Ring of the Nibelung”. Among others, Pavel Baleff has conducted the Staatskapelle Dresden, the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, the Munich Radio Orchestra, Philharmonia Zurich, the Bolshoi Theatre Orchestra and the WDR Symphony Orchestra. He has amassed a large repertoire of over 50 operatic works, from Baroque operas and bel canto works to verismo and operas by Strauss and Wagner. In 2011 he won The German Record Critics' Award 2012 and the International Classical Music Award 2012 for his recording of the Slavic Opera Arias with Krassimira Stoyanova and the Munich Radio Orchestra.
