Marburger Bachchor

The Marburg Bach Choir was founded in 1966 by students of the Philipps University
Marburg. The choir’s name stands first and foremost for their commitment to perfor challenging choral music, which of course is not limited to works by Bach but includes
composers from all styles and epochs of music history. Nicolo Sokoli became musical
director of the choir in 2002. In the previous 31 years the ensemble and its musical profile was essentially shaped by Wolfram Wehnert. The Marburg Bach Choir has won extraordinary acclaim for their persistent efforts to rediscover and interpret the church music of Jan Dismas Zelenka. The choir’s profile is characterized by international cultural projects – including most recently concert tours to Bulgaria, Rumania and England –, participation in numerous festivals, CD recordings and radio broadcasts. The ensemble excels in the sensitive interpretation and differentiated, authentic performance of a wide repertoire of works. Over the years, historical informed performance has increasingly gained in importance.
