The Collegium Musicum Basel was founded in 1951 on the initiative of members from the ranks of Basle’s opera orchestra at that time and capellmeister Albert E. Kaiser. As early as 1955 the newly formed group was engaged to perform as the Swiss Television Orchestra. From 1961 the CMB took part in the Mozart-Wochen Interlaken for eleven years. The more than 30 youth lecture concerts performed starting in 1963 were very well received.
Numerous tours have taken the CMB to Italy, France, Spain, Austria, Israel, to former Czechoslovakia and to Germany. Since 1956 Collegium Musicum Basel has become a fixture in Basle’s musical life by virtue of the six subscription concerts it performs each year at Basle’s Stadtcasino.
Highly successful cooperation has linked the orchestra for many years with internationally renowned soloists, including among many others Anne-Sophie Mutter, Martha Argerich, Nikita Magaloff, Rudolf Buchbinder, Ulf Hoelscher, Christian Ferras, Paul Tortelier, Gundula Janowitz, Edith Mathis, Maria Stader, Sharon Kam, Sol Gabetta and Barbara Bonney.
In 2004 Albert E. Kaiser handed over the leadership of the orchestra to young Swiss conductor Simon Gaudenz, who in his tenure has placed his distinctive stamp on the orchestra and guided its growing repertoire and artistic development.
Promoting new young talent is an important part of the CMB’s work: thus every year there are prize winner concerts with young soloists who have won awards at international music competitions. Since the 2006/07 season “Vorkonzerte” featuring upand-coming talent from the Musik-Akademie Basel have also been included in the orchestra’s annual schedule, offering a platform for young artists to show off their skills.
Conducting workshops regularly held in cooperation with the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Zürich offer student conductors the opportunity to gain experience leading a professional orchestra.
