Matthias Petersen was born in Hamburg, where he also received the greater part of his musical training. In addition to his piano studies with Professor Hartmann, which he completed summa cum laude, he also studied the organ and conducting. From 1976 to 1978 he attended the master class of Rudolf Buchbinder in Basel, obtaining a Music Performance degree (Solistendiplom).
Matthias Petersen participated in the 23rd series of Young Artists Concerts, performing in over 40 concerts during the 1979/80 season. This was followed by an extended series of concert appearances as soloist, accompanist and chamber musician, which in addition to numerous appearances in Germany, also took him to Switzerland, Denmark, Spain, South America, and Japan. In addition to solo performances with leading symphony orchestras (including the Philharmonisches Staatsorchester Hamburg and the Basel Symphony Orchestra), he has also collaborated with NDR and WDR Radio as well as performing on
Deutschlandfunk. Matthias Petersen has been a member of the faculty at Detmold Musikhochschule since 1983.
