Born in Singen, Germany in 1978, Nicole Kern received earliest instruction on the clarinet at the age of seven from Siegfried Worch. She quickly made a name for herself as a clarinet performer, winning First Prize in her category at Germany’s nationwide Jugend musiziert music competition in 1991 and 1993. She completed here studies with Prof. Waldemar Wandel in Trossingen and Prof. Francois Benda at the UdK Berlin (University of the Arts) where she has served on the faculty since 2004.
Nicole Kern was a scholarship recipient from the Karajan-Akademie der Berliner Philharmoniker as well as a member of the European Union Youth Orchestra. Ms. Kern has been Solo Clarinetist of the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, the Komische Oper Berlin and since 2005 has been Solo Clarinetist for the Staatstheater Stuttgart. In addition, she has also collaborated with leading conductors such as Claudio Abbado, Lorin Maazel, Bernard Haitink, Zubin Mehta, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Paavo Järvi, Daniel Harding, Nikolaus Harnoncourt and Sir Colin Davis.
