Mezzo-soprano I-chiao Shih was born in Taiwan. She studied voice in her homeland and at the state conservatories in Trossingen and Berlin (Hochschule für Musik “Hanns Eisler”) with Monika Moldenhauer and Wolfram Rieger. She received decisive artistic impetus from attending master classes given by Thomas Hampson, Irwin Gage and Kurt Widmer.

I-chiao Shih has won prizes several times at competitions. She has won Second Prize at the Paula Salomon-Lindberg Competition “Das Lied,” an endowment award from the German Music Conservatory Competition and the DAAD Prize from the Trossingen University of Music. During her studies in Taiwan she won First Prize in the Young Artist Showcase Competition, the prize as the foremost young concert artist at the National Symphony Orchestra, the Silver Award for Bel Canto at the International Chinese Vocal Competition in New York, earned the Honorable Mention Award at the Mondial Chinese Vocalist Concours Taipei, First Prize for Solo Alto at the Taiwan Students’ Music Competition, a scholarship from the University of Tunghai and a scholarship from National Taipei University. In addition, she was a Bayreuth scholarship recipient of the Richard Wagner Society.

I-chiao Shih is high in demand as a singer on the concert and operatic stage in Europe and Asia. Her current opera repertoire includes roles such as Octavian (Der Rosenkavalier), Waltraute (Götterdämmerung), Ortrud (Lohengrin), Hansel (Hansel and Gretel), Charlotte (Werther), Dorabella (Così fan tutte) and Penelope (Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria). She has been a permanent ensemble member of Theater Ulm since 2012.
