Ilya Konovalov was born in Novosibirsk, Russia. At the age of seven he began taking lessons from Prof. Zakhar Bron and later studied with Alexey Gvozdey and Prof. Dora Schwarzberg at the Wiener Musikakademie. He won First Prize at the International Wienjawski Competition. Since that time Ilya Konovalov has appeared in concert as a soloist and chamber musician in Russia, Norway, Indonesia, Brazil, Japan, Germany, The Netherland and has performed with orchestras such as Moscow Virtuosi, the Zurich Chamber Orchestra, the Israel Philharmonic
Orchestra, Moscow State Sympony and the American-Russian Symphony Orchestra. Ilya Konovalov has been the concertmaster of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra since 1997.
